Live Heart Healthy. Live Well & Live Long

The Salt Kills Spotlight

by | May 14, 2012

Last month, Catholic Health Partners (CHP) held its 30Th Governance Retreat & Academy in Atlanta, GA. CHP represents the largest health system in Ohio and one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the United States. With $5.4 billion in assets, CHP employs more than 32,000 associates in more than 100 organizations—including 24 hospitals—to meet the healthcare needs of people in Ohio, Kentucky and contiguous states, making it Ohio’s fourth largest employer. So their annual conference is a big deal.

I was particularly honored that my book Salt Kills was featured in this forum, which was attended by members of the board of trustees and executives of all the CHP institutions. President of the Board of Trustees Cathleen Eldridge introduced the book to the audience, of which I was a part.

Following an enthusiastic reception of Salt Kills, I fielded many questions and comments. Shortly thereafter, Michael Connolly, President and CEO of CHP met me and offered the following comment:

“[Salt Kills is] extremely well researched, unquestionably persuasive and a
great contribution to the health and wellbeing of the nation.”

I couldn’t have been more pleased. But that was just the start.

Bernice King, youngest daughter of Rev Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the keynote speech on Thursday April 26, 2012. After her speech, I presented Ms. King with a copy of the book in order to highligh the devastating problems caused by salt intake, especially among African Americans.

These kinds of movers and shakers can really get out the message about the dangers of salt. But so can you. Are you ready to join the no salt movement and help us spread the word?

I met Dr Nervetla on a flight from Chicago to the Uk. I was very interested in what he had to say about the effects of salt on the body. I read his book during the flight. I was easy to read and it has made me check the salt content of food and I have passed the word onto family and friends. I was surprised to find out that so called healthy meals for children in a British restaurant i.e. creamed potatoes, baked beans and grilled chicken contained more than a days recommended intake of salt for a child so watch out and spread the word.
