Salt and Children: A Dangerous Combination

by | Oct 16, 2012

Many adults don’t want to accept that salt compromises their health in ways they never imagined. That’s really too bad. As a cardiac surgeon, I operate daily on patients who could have prevented their health conditions by lessening—or eliminating—their salt intake. Now that I have published my book Salt Kills, more people are taking heed. Others, however, are determined to stick to their salty ways.

Thankfully, increasing numbers of parents are doing for their children what they often won’t do for themselves. That’s great news, especially considering that eating too much salt now can compromise children’s health immediately as well as into their adulthood. But as a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study shows, we have a long way to go.

I discovered your work yesterday when researching salt in more depth. I love eating salt-free and have eaten without salt for many months in the past. Neither do I miss anything nor do I feel I need to reintroduce salt.

What you say about children is very interesting – especially because children usually refuse to salt their food. I have heard many parents say how their children prefer to eat everything "bland" (which it no longer is once you cut out all salt).

Keep up the great work, and thanks so much for sharing!
